University of Kerala which was formerly known as the University of Travancore is located in Trivandrum, Kerala. It was established in 1937 by the Maharajah of Travancore, Sri Chithira Thirunal Balarama Varma ,who was also the first Chancellor of the university. Sir C. P. Ramaswami Iyer, the then Diwan(Prime Minister) of Travancore, was the first Vice-Chancellor.At present, the university has over 150 affiliated colleges spread over Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Alappuzha Districts and some parts of Pathanamthitta District. These colleges offer a spectrum of courses to students which includes arts, humanities, medicine, engineering, management, music etc. However, the day-to-day administration of these institutions is not under the purview of the University. The University also has a National College of Physical Education affiliated to it. The total number of students in these colleges is over 84,000. In addition to these, the university has sixteen faculties and forty one departments of teaching and research.
Semester system is followed for all the post graduate programs and it will soon be introduced for the undergraduate courses as well. It also has an active senate and academic council with students being actively represented in both. Overall, the main aim of the university is to empower students in every field possible. These efforts have also resulted in the university bagging top honors such as Indira Gandhi National award for best NSS activities.
